Classroom Etiquette at Oxford

                Please print a copy for reference.

    1. Never speak (with microphone) or chat (with keyboard) unless you are called on by the teacher.  The exceptions to this rule are the following:
        a. During the 10 minute break at the middle of the class you are free to chat freely (if honorably and respectfully);
        b. At the beginning and end of each class you are free to greet each other and to say good-bye;
        c. After another student has read a passage or answered a question, you are free to praise and/or to encourage them;
        d. You are always free to signal me that you have a question ("?") or that you have a comment you'd like to make ("!").

    2. You may use "Private Chat" to speak to the teacher or another student within limits.  The limit is whether or not you are disrupting the class.  If you or the other student lose track of what the teacher is saying, then you have passed the limit.   : )

   3. Use your real name in the classroom.  Nicknames are not allowed. Your teacher has enough trouble keeping track of you without the extra challenge of nick names!)   Since there are many students with the same first names, it is very important that you provide the teacher with at least the first initial of your last name, as follows:
        SallyJ
        RobertL

   4. Do not use your camera during class.  The exception to this rule is at the beginning of class (briefly, to say hello) and during the break at the middle of the class session.  (The cameras can be distracting.  Also, they use a lot of bandwidth and can decrease audio quality.)

    5. If you're having audio trouble, let the teacher know with a written message.  If it's at the beginning of the class, an attempt will be made to correct the problem.  You may need to re-connect with the classroom; re-connect with the internet; or re-boot your computer.  Be patient, and the teacher will do what he can to help you.  Once the class has started, there isn't much time for trouble-shooting.  Whenever possible, the teacher will send you notes for whatever material you miss during a class session.  Keep this link nearby in case you have to do some trouble-shooting on your own: http://www.oxfordtutorials.com/ComputerSetup&TroubleShooting.htm

    6. When the teacher asks for an audio check, type in your response using these symbols & abbreviations:
         *   =  I can hear you
        cl  =  your audio is clear
        ch =  you audio is choppy
        @ =  I have no audio

    7. Feel free to use abbreviations such as these on the public chat screen:
afk= away from keyboard (still connected, but away from the computer)
brb= be right back (about to reconnect)
ch= the audio is choppy
ctc= cut the chat/chatter (this is primarily for the teacher to use)
ga= go ahead, using your mic (this is primarily for the teacher to use)
lol= lots of laughs/laughing out loud
lpd= I am languishing in the pits of despair (humorous way of expressing frustration)
owg= I am overjoyed with gratitude at the thrill of new discoveries
rofl= rolling on the floor laughing (for especially good humor)
np= no problem (a word of comfort)
? = I have a question (this is like putting up your hand in a traditional classroom)
! =  I have a comment or I'm volunteering to read (also a way of putting up your hand)
@ = I have lost audio/no sound

    8. Always show respect toward the teacher and other students.  Disrespect toward the teacher and other students may include such immature expressions as "yada, yada, yada;" "blah, blah, blah;" "yawn....;" interruptions of the class with personal chat to another student; or inappropriate use of language, such as "dang, darn, damn," etc.

        All students of Oxford Tutorials are expected to observe these rules of respectful behavior.
                           Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the tutorials.
